About the Catalogue
The Historical Music Library is an independent public-domain ebook catalogue built for readers who want to explore the rich literature of music history, biography, criticism, and pedagogy. Our shelves bring together works that trace how music has been understood, taught, performed, and debated across centuries and cultures.
Every book here is drawn from sources that are freely available to the public. We do not claim that every title is in the public domain in every jurisdiction; readers are responsible for verifying the legal status of a work in their own country before reusing it. Our role is to select, organise, and present these texts in a way that makes them more discoverable and useful.
How the Catalogue Is Organised
Books are grouped into four broad categories that reflect different ways of approaching music literature:
- Music History — critical writings, histories, and analyses of music and its creators. Examples include Terpander; or, Music and the future, The story of opera, and The orchestra and orchestral music.
- Composers — lives, letters, and memoirs of musicians and figures connected to music. Works such as Life of Mozart and Deems Taylor appear here.
- Theory Instruction — works on music education, pedagogy, and the institutional life of music, including How music grew, from prehistoric times to the present day.
- Opera Performance — literary works that engage with music as theme or inspiration.
Each entry includes descriptive metadata such as author, title, and original publication details. Where possible, we add a short editorial note — a reading companion, contextual discussion, or background summary — to help orient the reader. These notes are not academic peer review; they are informal signposts written by the catalogue editor. For example, the note for Curiosities of Music: A Collection of Facts not generally known, regarding the Music of Ancient and Savage Nations provides background on the work's scope and approach, while the entry for Music in Medicine highlights its historical perspective on therapeutic uses of music.
How to Use the Collection
You can browse by category or search for specific authors, titles, or subjects. Each book is presented as a downloadable ebook file in standard formats. The files are drawn from public-domain sources and are offered as-is; we do not guarantee that every file is error-free or that every format will work on every device. Readers are encouraged to report formatting issues so that we can investigate and, where possible, correct them.
Our Approach to Historical Works
Many of the books in this catalogue were written in periods when social attitudes, language conventions, and scientific understanding were very different from today. Some contain descriptions, terminology, or viewpoints that modern readers may find outdated or offensive. We present these texts as historical documents, not as endorsements of their content. We believe that responsible access to the past includes the opportunity to read and reflect on such material in its original context.
Where a work includes a preface, introduction, or appendix by a later editor, we retain that material when it is part of the original public-domain edition. We do not add new introductions or critical apparatus unless noted. For multi-volume works such as The art of music (Volumes 03, 04, 05, and 07), each volume is catalogued separately with its own editorial note, allowing readers to focus on specific periods or topics.
Corrections and Feedback
We strive for accuracy in metadata and presentation, but errors can occur. If you notice a misattribution, a factual mistake in a reading note, or a problem with a file, please let us know. We cannot promise an immediate response, but we do review each submission carefully.
Responsible Use
This catalogue is a personal, independent project. It is not affiliated with any university, library, or commercial publisher. There is no paywall, no registration requirement, and no tracking of individual reading behaviour. We believe that public-domain literature should be accessible without barriers.
If you enjoy what you find here, we hope you will explore further — follow the references in the books, seek out other editions, and share what you learn. That is the best way to keep the music of the past alive.
